MISSION Savage Umbrella creates new works of theater striving to engage artists and audiences in critical conversation. With lust for the uncharted and the unknown; we embrace and dissect the familiar. Savage Umbrella believes that theater is a vehicle for important and complex conversations about who we are, how we are, where we come from, and how we connect with each other. Together is better. Get under the umbrella.
Night of New Works is an extension of Savage Umbrella’s mission. We value collaboration, fresh voices and new plays, and want to create a supportive structure to make those things happen. As an incubation program, Night of New Works provides local new work makers with time, space, and support to experiment and play in an ensemble-based setting culminating in public presentations of works-in-progress.
The inaugural Night of New Works was held in 2012, and was a time for company members to create, to workshop, and to play. In 2016, the program expanded to welcome more emerging makers to incubate, rehearse, and present new works-in-progress, outside of the confines of a full-scale production.
PROJECT DETAILS Three (3) participants will work with a Savage Umbrella producer and dramaturg, who will provide critical response and conversation as well as reflection in the form of artist-to-artist feedback. Participants will also have the opportunity to share work and feedback with each other. This series is designed for makers who are interested in exploring collaborative theater making, and who would benefit from an artistic sounding board. Solo artists or groups may apply. Applicants may submit as part of more than one proposal, as long as the projects are different.
Interdisciplinary, collaborative works are best suited for this program. In addition to theatre makers, playwrights, musicians, poets, etc., who are interested in exploring and leading a collaborative theatrical process for the first time are encouraged to apply.
“You truly cannot fail. Savage Umbrella will not let you and/or failure with Savage Umbrella is not possible. Let that truth guide you and your work.” (2016 Night of New Works participant)
We encourage diverse subject matter and forms of performance, and we highly encourage experimentation. Participants may create a short work, or present a piece of a longer work. For the public presentations, participants will be expected to show a minimum of 20 minutes of material and no more than 25 minutes of material. To facilitate effective audience feedback, the presentation is expected to look like a work-in-progress. Successful projects might look like a script reading with moments of movement, a presentation with lightly staged sections, or the use of 2-3 important props, sound cues, or representative costumes.
Presentations for the 2017 Night of New Works will be May 22 - 24, 2017 at The Southern Theater.
After each evening of presentations, Savage Umbrella company members will lead an invigorating and pointed feedback session with audiences. Final presentations will be photographed and video recorded, and participants will receive digital photo and video documentation for their portfolios. Savage Umbrella will promote the series to our contacts and community.
The Night of New Works application deadline is 11:59 PM on March 10, 2017. No late applications will be accepted.
